About Helen M. Anderson

Mrs. Anderson's love of music developed early in life. She began to study classical piano at the young age of 6. By the time she turned 15, she added private vocal instruction as well. Throughout her high school career, Mrs. Anderson took part in numerous musical contests, festivals and plays fueling her love for the arts and helping her discover the benefits music lessons have for anyone desiring to learn and grow.

Once out of high school, Mrs. Anderson furthered her ambitions by studying voice and piano at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. While attending NSU, she appeared numerous times as a soloist with the NSU Concert Choir. In 2007, she performed as Peep-Bo in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado as well as winning NSU's Concerto/Aria Competition. At that time, she was invited to perform Bellini's aria "O Quante Volte" as a guest soloist with the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony under the baton of Dr. Robert Vodnoy. Other performances include Hipolyte in Moliere's The Bungler, Miss Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, Lilli Vanessi in Kiss Me Kate, and the chorus line in Damn Yankees and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

In addition to her numerous performances, Mrs. Anderson loved to compete in various competitions and festivals for voice and piano winning multiple awards and receiving top ratings from judges throughout North and South Dakota including the ND NATS vocal competition, SDMTA Collegiate Voice contest and the National Piano Guild Collegiate auditions.

During her studies at NSU, Mrs. Anderson was able to develop her love of teaching. In 2007, Mrs. Anderson graduated summa cum laude from Northern with a degree in vocal and instrumental Music Education. She currently teaches private voice and piano in Aberdeen, where she founded Anderson Music Studio in 2002. Mrs. Anderson teaches students of all ages, beginners through advanced. In her studio, students learn classical voice and piano technique, music theory, music history, sight reading, memorization, and composition. Students have the opportunity to participate in one studio recital every year, state SDMTA competitions, local AAMTA events, Aberdeen Area Piano Festival, National Piano Guild Auditions, and the NFMC Composition Contest.

Mrs. Anderson believes music study brings balance and harmony to every person that allows it into their life. Everyone can learn and grow their musical abilities. Each student learns differently and at different paces. Mrs. Anderson works hard to meet each student's own specific needs but more importantly, helps foster a lifelong love of music. She loves to encourage students to reach their highest potential, rejoice with their successes and teach them how to learn from their mistakes.

In the Fall of 2017, Mrs. Anderson decided to begin teaching within the public schools in addition to her private teaching. She currently teaches part-time general music with the Leola School District servicing their three Hutterite colonies. While at the colonies, she teaches note reading, rhythm reading, music history, music appreciation, classical vocal technique and has even incorporated acting. She especially enjoys sharing her love of music with the students and learning about Hutterite culture.

Currently, Mrs. Anderson furthers her professional development with her membership in Music Teacher's National Association along with her participation in various workshops and online classes. In addition, Mrs. Anderson, along with her husband, served faithfully at their local church, Aberdeen Christian Fellowship, as worship leaders and pastors from 2005-2017.
